Daniel B. Oerther, Ph.D., PE, BCEE                 daniel.oerther@uc.edu

Professor and Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Dr. Oerther joined the University of Cincinnati in September, 2000. Dan earned his B.A. in molecular biology and biochemistry and his B.S. in environmental engineering from Northwestern University in 1995, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana in 1998 and 2002, respectively.

Dr. Oerther's research interests include molecular microbial ecology, public health microbiology, and bioprocess engineering as well as sustainable development.  As the director of the WQB laboratory, daily duties include meeting with team members, coordinating extramural funding, editing WQB publications, and instruction. Dr. Oerther is also serving as the director of the Center for Sustainable Urban Engineering.

Dr. Oerther's CV includes more than 100 scientific works on his research and educational outreach activities.

Recognition of Dr. Oerther's work includes:

  • Eagle Scout, Boy Scouts of America (1989);
  • the Montgomery Watson/AEESP M.S. Thesis Award (1998) and the AEESP Outstanding Educator Award (2004);
  • Engelbrecht Fellowship (1997) and the Mavis Memorial Fund for Teaching (1998) from the University of Illinois;
  • the Wandmacher Young Teacher Award (2001) and the Outstanding Young Researcher Award (2007) from the College of Engineering at the University of Cincinnati;
  • the Young Engineer of the Year (2003) and the Outstanding Educator of the Year (2005) from the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers;
  • the CAREER Award (2003) from the National Science Foundation;
  • a Fulbright Fellowship from the U.S. Department of State (2006);
  • the UC|21 President's Excellence Award (2007) and inagural membership in the Academy of Fellows for Teaching and Learning (2007) from the University of Cincinnati. 

Dr. Oerther is married with three children and lives in Hyde Park, Ohio.
