Ting Lu lutg@email.uc.eduA first year M.S. candidate, Ting received her B.S. in environmental engineering at Shandong University in China in 2004. Her undergraduate research examined the flocculant activity by flocculant-producing bacteria grown on dairy wastewater. The experience inspired her interest in interdisciplinary research combining molecular techniques, environmental engineering, and computer programming. From June through August of 2004, Ting also was in residence at Stanford University through a Stanford-Singapore joint partnership summer program. There she completed advanced coursework in environmental microbiology, groundwater flow, fate and movement of organic contaminants, and aquatic chemistry. These studies helped her gain a deeper understanding of environmental engineering and its interdisciplinary nature, in particular the relationship between microbiology and chemistry. Ting's current research is on building computer models of biofilms and bioflocculants in order to capture key features of biodiversity. The aim is to provide better process operation and design. Ting's research thesis aims to test the hypothesis that species dynamics in biofilm and bioflocs show less sensitivity to change in HRT and SRT than traditional activated sludge systems. Following the parameters described in the model, she intends to operate laboratory-scale annular reactors and to confirm model predictions using molecular techniques. Questions? Contact Daniel B.
